They were all born into wealthy families in Florence, and were friends from childhood. They were all successful in their respective careers, and had bright futures ahead of them.
However, in 1233, they experienced a life-changing event that would alter the course of their lives forever. While attending Mass at the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, they heard a sermon by a hermit named Fra Filippo. Fra Filippo spoke about the life of Christ and the suffering of the Virgin Mary, and the message resonated deeply with the seven friends. They felt a call to follow the example of Christ and dedicate themselves to the service of Mary.
The seven friends renounced their wealth and status, and began to live as hermits in a small house in Florence. They wore simple black robes and dedicated themselves to a life of prayer and penance. They also devoted themselves to the service of the sick and poor, visiting hospitals and caring for those in need.
The group soon attracted followers, and in 1240, they received formal recognition as a religious order from Pope Innocent IV. They took the name of the Servants of Mary, and adopted a rule of life based on the Rule of St. Augustine. They also chose to dedicate themselves to the Seven Sorrows of Mary, a devotion that was central to their spirituality.
The Order of Servites grew rapidly, spreading throughout Italy and beyond. The Servites played an important role in the spiritual and social life of medieval Europe, and were known for their devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, their commitment to poverty and humility, and their dedication to the service of others. They founded hospitals, schools, and charitable organizations, and worked tirelessly to promote peace and justice in their communities.
